Cher being Cher is always in the news!

Cher is an American singer and actress who got her start as half of Sonny and Cher in the 1960s. She has since amassed international fame and popularity, with an array of Top 10 hits and screen roles, to winning an Oscar for her role in the film, 'Moonstruck'.

Cher is known for her distinctive contralto singing voice and varied work in diverse areas of entertainment, as well as adopting a variety of styles and appearances throughout her six-decade-long career.

Over the years, Cher has not only pushed sensibilities with her music and acting but also with her extravagant, unusual costumes to make a statement, theatrically.

I still remember that memorable night way back in 1986, watching TV with my younger sister...Cher wore a sparkling showgirl-inspired two-piece set and towering headpiece by Bob Mackie to the Oscars as the Academy didn't take her as a serious actress. She caused a stir at the iconic red carpet leaving the audience bemused.

Later on in 1988, to pick up her golden statuette, Cher did not disappoint, wearing a black mesh Bob Mackie again. Designer Bob Mackie, who worked with her has created a series of outfits that are unabashedly fun & in the eye!

At the time of her Oscar win, Cher’s music career was also flourishing and her 1986 self-titled album contained hit singles written with Michael Bolton (“I Found Someone”) and Jon Bon Jovi (“We All Sleep Alone”) and she released another million-selling album, Heart of Stone, in 1988.

Cher has a way with words, whether addressing social and political issues she believes in, or her diverse work spanning six decades in the entertainment industry.

Cher's 1996 interview with Jane Pauley went viral because of bytes like: "My mom said to me, 'One day you should settle down and marry a rich man.' I said, 'Mom, I am a rich man.'" Her mother is in her nineties while Cher herself is around seventy-four years old.

She made strong statements like

"Men aren't necessities. They're luxuries".

Cher has recorded hundreds of songs, from her folk-pop days in the 1960s to the disco of the 1970s, her rockier image in the 1980s and her out and out pop of the 1990s.

Some of my favourite songs include 'Believe', 'The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)', 'I Got You Babe', 'If I Could Turn Back Time', and 'Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves'.

The iconic singer is noted for her political views, social media presence, philanthropic endeavors, and social activism, including LGBT rights and HIV/AIDS prevention, Covid 19 awareness and fundraising. Her older child, Chaz Bono first came out as a lesbian at 17years, which caused Cher to feel "guilt, fear, and pain". However, she soon came to accept this fact and became one of the most vocal advocates of the LGBT community.

In 1988, she received the GLAAD Vanguard award for having made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community.

Recently, the celebrity animal rights activist was in the news, saving the world's loneliest elephant "kaavan". This "happy ending" story received widespread international coverage.

Local Pakistani activists first put Kaavan's plight on with a Twitter campaign, aiming messages with the hashtag #SaveKaavan and #FreeKaavan at celebrities worldwide.

When Cher heard about Kaavan, she enlisted the help of Mark Cowne, a global talent agency boss with a passion for wildlife, and was responsible for saving 300 elephants from zoos.

After years of relentless campaigning after Cher joined in the campaign in 2016 to free Kaavan from an abhorrent and unacceptable dismal life, Kaavan finally left for a sanctuary in Cambodia on Sunday, said Martin Bauer, spokesman for Four Paws International, a global animal welfare group that’s led the charge to save Kaavan.

The superstar had originally focused her efforts on trying to get an elephant out of the Los Angeles Zoo, Ruiz her assistant said, but they've had no success so far in California.

Cher told her 'you do your best with what falls in your lap.' If someone asks you, you try to do your best."

“A dream is a wish your heart makes,” she sang to the elephant in Pakistan, belting the hopeful lyrics from the “Cinderella” ballad.

In a tweet following her meeting with the prime minister of Pakistan, Cher said she thanked Khan for "Making it possible for me to take Kavaan to Cambodia". She also tweeted about making a heartwarming documentary on kavaan.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams".
Cher is undoubtedly a woman of substance and as someone said there are divas & there is Cher!

Cher's abilities to combine "showmanship with powerful music and make valid statements in a wide variety of trending causes as well as to ease effortlessly between pop subgenres, to shock without alienating her fans", as well as by her charismatic stage presence has transformed her into an icon of hope. And the loneliest elephant Kaavan is no longer lonely & has started a happy life in Cambodia with fellow elephants.

As Cher said, "Women are the real architects of society".
