National Science Day is celebrated every year on February 28 by CV Raman to discover the Raman effect. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for the same.

The celebration also includes public speeches, radio, TV, science movies, science exhibitions based on themes and concepts, debates, quiz competitions, lectures, science model exhibitions and many more activities.

Every year, the National Science Day is celebrated with a theme. The theme for National Science Day 2021 is ‘Future of STI: Impact on Education Skills and Work’. NSD Theme has been chosen for the purpose of increasing public appreciation of the scientific issues involved. Celebrations of important Scientific Days with associated events bring scientific awareness in the community. Many institutions organize open house for their laboratories and appraise students about career opportunities available in a particular research laboratory/institution.

Objectives of Celebrating National Science Day

The day is celebrated to mark the importance of contributions made by scientists towards the development of our nation and the world as a whole. It is used to create awareness about the role of science in society.

National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST) acts as a nodal agency to support, catalyze and coordinate celebration of the National Science Day throughout the country in scientific institutions, research laboratories and autonomous scientific institutions associated with the Department of Science and Technology. NCSTC has supported various programmes countrywide by supporting its State S&T Councils & Departments for organization of lectures, quizzes, open houses, etc.

DST instituted National Awards for Science Popularization in February 1987 to stimulate, encourage and recognize outstanding efforts in the area of science and technology for popularization, communication and promoting scientific temper. These awards are presented every year on National Science Day.

National Science Day not only commemorates a great Indian scientist and one of his great discoveries but also promotes science as a part of our everyday living. When the approach of the society becomes scientific in every aspect – growth and prosperity will follow as the outcome. Therefore, the day must be observed with full support from the government and concerned departments.
