The Fall migration of Hummingbirds!
Bird migration is a seasonal movement of some birds between breeding and wintering grounds that occurs twice a year. It is typically from north to south or from south to north. Migration is inherently risky, due to predation and mortality. Many bird species migrate in winter to find food, flee harsh conditions, and ensure their survival.
As summer continues her graceful exit in north America one of nature’s smallest long-distance travelers is already taking wing for warmer southern climates, from their breeding grounds in North America to wintering sites in Mexico and Central America. The fall hummingbird migration is underway in North America. They are the smallest migrating bird. They don't migrate in flocks like other species, and they typically travel alone for up to 500 miles at a time.
Triggers for migration include decreasing daylight, fewer flowers and insects, and an internal biological calendar. Males leave first, followed by females, and then the young birds.Hummingbirds gain significant weight, up to 40% of their body mass, before migrating to store energy for their long journeys.
During the journey, hummingbirds need to consume a lot of nectar to fuel their long flight, and they rely on temporary stopover sites with food and water sources. Hummingbirds fly during the day to take advantage of abundant nectar from flowers along their routes. The mass movement is typically in swing by late August - though the males may make an earlier start - and it continues into late October and beyond.
Hummingbirds take extraordinary to a whole new level. They are the smallest warm-blooded creatures on the planet, but they are also among the fastest. With wings that beat up to 200 times every second, they are among nature's most accomplished athletes, the only birds able to hover, fly backwards, and even upside down.
You can help by keeping hummingbird feeders filled with sugar water to support these birds during their migration. Also plant nectar rich plants in your garden to help these tiny birds.Did you know a group of hummingbirds is called a charm because the hummingbird symbolizes the enjoyment of life and lightness of being.
