Wetlands are defined as any area of land that is primarily covered by water, either permanently or seasonally.
The theme of WWD-2024 is 'Wetlands and Human Wellbeing' which underscores the critical role wetlands play in enhancing our lives. It highlights how wetlands contribute to flood protection, clean water, biodiversity and recreational opportunities, all of which are essential for human health and prosperity.
Wetlands are one of the most threatened of all ecosystems in India. Loss of vegetation, salinization, excessive inundation, water pollution, invasive species, excessive development and road building, have all damaged the country's wetlands.
Ramsar site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention an international environmental treaty signed on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, under the auspices of UNESCO.
Today there are 80 Ramsar sites in India, all of which are recognised as Wetlands of Importance under the Ramsar Convention.
The first Ramsar site in Odisha is the Chilika Lake which was declared in 1981.
Chilika Lake
Odisha has a total of 6 wetlands i.e. Ansupa Lake, Bhitarkanika Mangroves, Chilika Lake, Hirakud Reservoir, Satkosia Gorge and Tampara lake.
Wetlands are critical to people and nature and their sustainability; awareness and action are required by all stakeholders.
